What do I need in the final exam?

Why the answer is different for every subject

Most calculators assume one rule for everything. There isn't one. DHET's own 2026 ICASS Guidelines state that "the pass percentages and ratios vary for different instructional programmes", and they do — sometimes dramatically:

• Industrial Electronics N4–N6 — promotion mark is 30% ICASS + 70% exam.
• Electrotechnics, Mechanotechnics, Power Machines, Fluid Mechanics — 40% + 60%.
• NATED Mathematics N4–N6 — no promotion ratio at all. Your ICASS mark only decides whether you may write; the exam then stands alone at 40%.
• NC(V) Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy — 25% internal + 75% external, passing at 30%, and that 30% is a sub-minimum in both components rather than an average.

Questions students ask

What mark do I need in the final exam to pass?
It depends on your subject, because the ratio between your college (ICASS) mark and the exam is not the same everywhere. Industrial Electronics promotes on 30% ICASS + 70% exam, Electrotechnics and Mechanotechnics on 40% + 60%, NC(V) fundamentals on 25% + 75%, and NATED Mathematics has no promotion ratio at all — there the exam stands alone. What is an ICASS mark?
Internal Continuous Assessment: the tests, assignments and internal exams your college marks during the trimester or semester. On NATED you need at least 40% to be admitted to the final examination at all, and for many subjects it then counts towards your promotion mark as well.

Can a good exam mark make up for a bad ICASS mark?
On NATED, partly — if the subject has a promotion ratio, a strong exam can offset a weak ICASS mark, provided you reached 40% and were admitted to write. On NC(V) it cannot: the pass percentage is a sub-minimum you must reach in the internal and external components separately, not an average across them.

What happens if I fail?
On NC(V) your ICASS mark is only valid up to the first supplementary examination after the November sitting. If you fail you redo every ICASS task for that subject — nothing carries over to the next academic year.
