Computerised Financial Systems N4: where the marks actually are
Accounting on a computer rather than on paper — VAT, the accounting cycle, and processing suppliers, customers and journals in an accounting package.
N4 is being phased out. DHET is closing the NATED Report 191 programmes and replacing them with occupational qualifications. Its teach-out schedule (DHET TVET Circular TC 0134, 24 July 2025) gives the last national N4 examination for Business and Services Studies as Semester 1 2026. The last cohort gets a first sitting in Semester 2 2025 and one repeat semester — two chances, not the usual open-ended ones.
This is not a reason to stop. The National N Diploma can still be awarded up to 30 June 2029. Complete before 30 June 2026 and you receive the certificate exactly as now; after it, a DHET Statement of Results, which still counts toward the diploma. The Minister confirmed in June 2026 that qualifications already achieved stay valid and enrolled students should carry on.
Check your own dates with your college. The Department has since issued a revised circular, TC 0134(b), which it has not published, and further extensions were gazetted in June 2026 — so the date above is what DHET last put in writing publicly, not a promise about your intake.
What the exam is worth, module by module
These are DHET's own weight values. The syllabus states that a module's weight value gives the time to be spent teaching it and its share of the marks in the final exam — so this table is, in effect, the mark allocation of your paper. It totals 100.
| Module | Weight | |
|---|---|---|
| Take-on balances and processing of supplier and customer transactions | 35 | |
| Processing of subsidiary journals and bank reconciliation statement | 30 | |
| Sundry adjustments | 10 | |
| The use of computer systems and computerised accounting | 5 | |
| Mastering a word processing program | 5 | |
| Theory and application of VAT | 5 | |
| Accounting cycle and set-up of new company parameters | 5 | |
| Financial statements | 5 |
How to spend your time
- Two modules carry 65 of the 100 marks: take-on balances with supplier and customer processing (35) and subsidiary journals with bank reconciliation (30). Everything else is a five-marker.
- The syllabus allocates 3 weeks to the 35-mark module and 4 weeks to the 30-mark one — seven of your weeks are spent on two thirds of the paper. Budget your own time the same way.
- This is a practical subject. Reading about processing a supplier invoice earns nothing; you have to do it in the package until it is automatic.
Getting in
You need one of these:
- Accounting at Grade 12, or Applied Accounting at senior certificate level, NCV Level 4 or equivalent
- Without Accounting at senior certificate level, a pass in Mathematics may also admit you
One semester.
